The sun is shining in York today (Tuesday, 8 March), so what better way is there to celebrate International Women’s Day than with an audio trail through the city learning about women who have made a difference to the city?

History project HerStory.York is spearheading International Women’s Day with a new exhibition opening in York Castle Museum and an audio walking tour happening throughout the city.

Kate Hignett launched HerStory.York after being appalled at how little women appear in history books. She decided to change this and set up the company to give women of history the recognition they deserve. And the rest, as they say, is history…

The exhibition, inspired by the ‘100 Women’ project HerStory.York has been running, will open tomorrow (Wednesday 9 March) at York Castle Museum. It will show women past and present who have done notable things to improve the city.

The free audio walking tour has been run through Good Organisation and features ten locations of significance to women’s history in York.

The tour is independent and can be accessed through Good Organisation’s website along with a map of the sites and the downloadable audio files. There is also a transcript available for anyone with a hearing impairment.

Kenny Lieske, the director of Good Organisation says: “We were looking at different ways of running tours after Covid hit so independent tours became a big part of what we do.

“Getting involved with International Women’s Day and HerStory.York seemed natural as one of our advisory board members works for them. It’s a great way for people to explore the city and see it from different historical perspectives.”

The tour is narrated by Vicky MacPhil and features many of York’s iconic locations including: York Art Gallery, York Minster, Mansion House and York Magistrates Court.
