Get ready to celebrate Christmas Ukrainian style in York – as Ukrainian refugees and children present a traditional nativity performance.
Vertep will take place at Poppleton Methodist Church Hall on Thursday 15 December at 7pm.
There will be carols, dances and folk scenes. Adults and children will be dressed in traditional Ukrainian costumes of the Baroque period.
“We will show how significant and amazing our culture and our heritage is,” said event organiser Anna Gorozhenko. Anna is from Kyiv and now stays with her daughter in Poppleton.
Taking its roots from the 16th century, the performance will include traditional scenes that are shown in every Ukrainian village and town during the Christmas period.
The performance will be complemented by carol singing, and English subtitles will be included.
There will also be an opportunity to taste Ukrainian dishes – that are traditionally served on Christmas Eve.
This is a charity event, with all donations being sent to Ukraine to help preserve Ukrainian culture and heritage.
