Could you have the best beard or moustache in York?
There’s a new competition coming to York to put your facial hair to the test.
Victor Kenny, founder of the men’s grooming brand Captain Mustache, has created the competition to find the best facial hair from around York, the UK, and perhaps even the world.
The inaugural Captain Mustache Beards & Moustaches Competition will take place at The Crescent on Saturday 2 September 2023.
The inspiration behind the competition came from Vic going to other competitions around the country – particularly the national UK Beard & Moustache competition in August of last year.
“I was looking around, thinking to myself ‘I could do this’, and started planning it in my head,” said Vic. “And here we are!”
There will be 11 categories open to enter – and they’re looking for the “best, weirdest and most fabulous beards and moustaches.”
- Best Moustache
- Best Partial Beard
- Natural under 4 inch Beard
- Styled under 4 inch Beard
- Natural under 8 inch Beard
- Styled under 8 inch Beard
- Natural Over 8 inch Beard
- Styled Over 8 inch Beard
- Freestyle Beard
- Kids Creative Beard / Moustache
- Female Creative Fake Beard / Moustache
There will also be prizes up for grabs. Each of the first, second and third places will receive a hand made axe trophy and a Captain Mustache boxset. The winner of each category will have their likeness immortalised by the artist Abbie Stabby.
Vic started Captain Mustache in 2015 when he grew a comedy moustache. After trying many different types of a moustache wax and misplacing them, and in a case of ‘if you want something done right’, “I figured it would just be a lot easier if I could make some myself,” said Vic.
“After some experimenting, I perfected the recipe, and my friends also wanted to get some off of me. This is when the business idea started and I decided to start selling it.”
He went on to create more grooming products like beard oils and beard balms, and has branched out to make patches, enamel pins, t-shirts, and tote bags.
“Everything I make, from the wax to the bags, is completely vegan as well.”

And Vic has some big plans in the works for future events.
“It would be the dream to make this an annual event, and we have some great plans for the future,” said Vic.
“If this goes well, there is a very good chance we could hold the UK Beard competition in this great city. Plus the possibility of the World Beard and Moustache competition as well.”
The biennial World Beard and Moustache competition has previously taken place in cities across the world including Antwerp, Berlin, and Austin. Brighton is the only UK city to have hosted the event – so far. Here’s hoping York could be next!
All profits from the event will be going to the charity York Mind.
After the competition, there’ll be music from York band Attention Freaks.
“My advice for all of the beautiful beards and moustaches that are coming over to our first competition is to just keep them luscious locks growing,” said Vic. “You can do it!”
