The water has gone off in Selby again – forcing schools and businesses to close.
The outage is affecting the YO8 postcode and is affecting as many as 16,000 properties today (Monday, 18 March).
Yorkshire Water is aware of the problem and engineers are working to fix it.
It is the second time in a week this has happened. Schools had to shut last Monday due to water supply problems.
Selby High School shut at lunchtime today, and is in the process of sending students home.
It said on social media: “There is currently no cold water supply coming into school. This means there are no flushing toilets, no drinking water in the fountains and no water available in the kitchens.
“We have made the decision to close the school for the rest of the day for health & safety reasons.
“We will start sending students home from 12pm. Please could you send an email to the school at [email protected] if you are not happy for your child to make their way home by themselves.
“We will supervise students in school if necessary. Buses are also on their way.”
Longmans Primary School was also reported to be closing this afternoon.
According to another social media report, “numerous pubs” in Selby were also closed.
Selby MP Keir Mather said: “I’m aware of problems with the water supply in Selby, Brayton, Thorpe Willoughby and the surrounding area.
“I’ve made contact with Yorkshire Water to get an idea of timescales for its return – I understand that many households have low water pressure or no water.”
Yorkshire Water posted on X: “We’re aware that some customers in YO8 may be experiencing low pressure or no water. We’re really sorry about this and our teams are in the area investigating the issue.”
In a later update they added: “Our technicians are in the process of getting water back to all the properties. As there was a large number of properties affected this may take a little while.”
A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We experienced an issue during routine maintenance at Brayton reservoir, which has since been resolved by our team.”
