‘Santa!!! Oh my gosh, I know him!’ Elf the Musical gets its York premiere
It may only be October but Christmas is already in the air.
Theatre company York Stage are bringing the festive spirit to the city with Elf the Musical.
This will be the first time the musical has been performed in York, and it will star West End performer Damien Poole.

Elf the Musical will be at Grand Opera House York from Thursday 25 November to Friday 3 December 2021.
“We’ve got a sensational cast,” said York Stage artistic director Nik Briggs. “It really is the hot ticket this Christmas!”
For the press event, the basement of Sotano on Little Stonegate was transformed into a festive grotto – complete with Christmassy lights and decorations!
With live performances and opportunities to speak with the cast, it was the perfect glimpse into the forthcoming show.

Elf the Musical is based on the much-loved 2003 film, starring Will Ferrell, and tells the story of Buddy – a human who believes he is an elf and who sets off on an adventure to discover his true identity.
“It’s a full on magical, exciting song and dance bonanza,” said Damien Poole, who will be playing Buddy.
Damien has spent ten years performing on the West End in shows such as Grease, Shrek the Musical and Groundhog Day.
He’s also performed as superstar Adele’s backing singer at Wembley.
“That’s quite a nice thing to be able to say,” Damien said. “She’s very nice – very supportive. You felt like you were part of the whole experience.
“She swears quite a lot…”
As for Sophie Hammond, who plays Buddy’s love interest Jovie, this production will be a homecoming of sorts – as she last performed at the Grand Opera House over a decade ago in York Stage’s production of Footloose.
“It’s a pleasure to come back to York and perform for York Stage,” Sophie said. “Especially Christmas time – it’s such a magical time of year.”
With over a month to go before opening night, tickets are already selling fast.
“It’s been a really hard time for the theatre industry,” Sophie said. “I feel really privileged to be able to do this and see that audience.
“It’s such an uplifting show.”
“I think that first moment on stage is what I’m looking forward to the most,” Damien added.
“Seeing happiness and laughter and just kids enjoying life – which is what I feel like we’ve missed.”
