An inclusive club

One of York’s historic rugby clubs has held its first sevens tournament for 40 years.

Structural changes in the rugby union world, which saw a move from friendly to league competition, allowed York RI RUFC to hold the tournament on June 24.

The winners were Wetherby. In a cracking high scoring final they triumphed 43 points to 26 over Rascals.

And now York RI RUFC (York Railway Institute Rugby Union Football Club) is recruiting more members.

The club was founded in 1925 at York Railway Institute on Queen Street.

Today it offers the opportunity for young people to get involved in rugby, football, boxing, dance and many more activities.

Strength in depth

Sporting action from the tournament

“It’s a great place to enjoy sports, socialise, make friends and to be a part of a team,” said Mei Wilshire from the club.

And if you likes sports you’ll go far: two of the club’s players have been selected for England Colts.

There’s a strong support team at the club.

Chair of York RI RUFC Dr Alistair Jordan works with professional and regional athletes and sports teams in strength and conditioning and performance analysis. He is also a lecturer at York St John University.
