Roadworks on one of York’s busiest routes have been further extended after running into more problems.
Work to repair two bridges on the A1237 outer ring road began on 29 May, and were scheduled to last five weeks, finishing by 3 July.
Although the works took place at night, the temporary ramps and speed limit led to gridlock at rush hour.
The repairs to the Rawcliffe Ings Bridge over the River Ouse and Millfield Railway Bridge were then extended for three weeks, to 21 July.
This was due to “unforeseen circumstances during the excavation stage of the scheme”.
Now the works have been extended again.
It follows problems with a temporary road surface, which led to a large pothole appearing on the Poppleton stretch of the A1237 this weekend. It stretched across most of the eastbound carriageway.
James Gilchrist, director of transport, environment and planning at City of York Council, gave us this update: “As soon as we became aware of potholes on the A1237 we contacted our contractor, who repaired the damage through a fix on Sunday night.
“This will be monitored and a permanent fix put in place on Tuesday night.
“The essential maintenance work to the bridge is taking longer than hoped as some utilities need diverting.
“This meant a temporary surface was put down which, combined with the bad weather, resulted in this weekend’s potholes appearing.
“Work this week will be carried out overnight under temporary traffic signals and we will continue to do all we can to minimise disruption. We expect work to be complete by 4 August.
“While recent changes to the traffic management have led to less congestion in the area, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
