New research into house purchases has revealed the most popular street in York – as well as which postcode area has seen most sales.

Drumroll… The most popular street in York for people buying homes in the past three years is: Toft Green.

That’s according to analysis by Jorvik Removals.

The York-based removal company crunched Land Registry data for more than 9,500 house sales between 2021 and 2023 to find which street most people bought homes in York.

They found:

  • Toft Green was the most popular destination for people buying in York – with 100 sales in the past three years
  • YO24 is the most popular postcode for people moving in York
  • City centre living has dropped from 5.5% of all house moves in 2021 to 4.5% in 2023
  • Average property prices for York rose by nearly 8% between 2021 and 2023
  • Bishy Road – once voted the best high street in the UK – was the most popular destination for movers in 2023.

Toft Green was the most popular choice for house movers in the last three years due to the new flats built as part of the Victoria, Kings and Hudson Quarter developments.

But it won’t hold the title for long, as most of these apartments have been sold. For the year 2023 alone, the street dropped out of the top 10 with only three properties bought last year – compared to 65 in 2021 and 32 in 2022.

Its position close to both the station and the city centre makes Toft Green an appealing street. According to this research, these apartments were on average more affordable than similar ones on Piccadilly.

Bishopthorpe Road was in second place. In 2021, 24 properties were sold on the street, which incorporates the popular “Bishy Road” run of shops and cafés. In 2022, 25 properties were bought here. The number dropped to just 15 in 2023 – possibly as popularity pushed prices up.

When it comes to the wider regions, the most popular was the YO24 postcode – this covers Dringhouses, Foxwood and Woodthorpe. It includes streets like Tadcaster Road and Gale Lane.

According to Jorvik, the postcode area is popular as it also offers “some of York’s most affordable living” – with an average price over the period of £316,646, the fourth lowest in the top ten.

The research also found that the numbers of people choosing to live within York’s city walls is falling.

The total percentage of people moving house to within the YO1 postcode has dropped from 5.5% of all house moves in 2021 to 4.5% in 2023.

Jorvik Removals is a family-run business with moving experience and knowledge passed down from father to son for three generations (over 80 years).

In fact, the grandfather of current owner, Melvyn Hughes, started his own house removal firm back in 1948.

Mervyn said: “At Jorvik, we’re familiar with these new city centre developments in York, having moved a number of people into these flats. If you’re looking to move in to a new flat in York centre, we can help.”
