Revealed: The shop moving into a former pub on Stonegate in York

Mon 5 Dec

It's both a shop and a pub

The potential new occupier for a striking historic shop on Stonegate in York has been revealed.

What was for many years the Yorkshire Brewery shop, with the Yorkshire Terrier pub above, is a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1600s.

More recently No 10 Stonegate was occupied by Ellie Warburtons Cakes, a spin-off shop from the famous bakery firm.

It opened in May, but that turned out to be a pop-up, and closed again in July.

Now, it looks set to become the new home of Ramsdens, which sells jewellery and offers a mix of financial services including:

  • travel money
  • pawnbroking loans
  • the ability to cash a cheque, or sell jewellery.

Ramsdens currently has an outlet on Market Street. It hit the headlines in October when a hammer-wielding raider smashed the shop window in an attempt to get to the jewellery on display.

He was later jailed for ten months.

It is not clear whether the Ramsdens on Market Street would stay open alongside the new branch on Stonegate.

Under plans submitted to City of York Council, strong laminated glass will be installed in the Stonegate shop window.

And it will be fitted with jewellery display fittings, with a sign promoting luxury watch brands ‘Rolex, Breitling and Omega’.

“Apart from repainting the shop front black and adding some simple signage over the shop window no changes to the front elevation are proposed,” planning documents state.

The plans would also see a low level internal wall on the ground floor removed “to provide improved public access to display/sales area at rear of shop”.

New partition walls would form currency exchange booths and jewellery display fittings.

“The above works are considered necessary to provide an efficient working environment for the new occupant’s business,” planning documents state.

“The security features are necessary due to the expensive jewellery items on sale and the cash required for the foreign exchange facility.”

This is the latest shop in York in the pipeline which will sell jewellery and high-end watches. The former Accessorize and Space NK shops on Davygate are set to be merged to become a Beaverbrooks/Tag Heuer outlet.

And a Breitling store, selling luxury watches, is set to take over the former Halifax bank, also on Davygate.

It would be next door to the new Mappin & Webb jewellery store which is due to open soon in the former Debenhams unit.
