A long empty bank branch is set to become home to a luxury retailer.
The Halifax closed its outlet on Davygate in 2018. And it has stood empty ever since.
But plans are in to turn it into a Breitling store, selling luxury watches.
The Watches of Switzerland Group has applied to make changes to the shop front, to best showcase the Breitling watches.
“The intention of the development is to showcase the brand within the context of the existing street scene, and to enhance the area through bringing a vacant premises back into use,” planning documents state.
It would be next door to Bettys Café and Tea Rooms, and its other neighbour would be the new Mappin & Webb jewellery store which is due to open soon in the former Debenhams unit.
The planning application states: “It is proposed to replace the existing frameless glazed shopfront and entrance doors with a new powder coated aluminium framed shopfront which incorporates security and ram raid protection in accordance with the security needs of the proposed high-end retail jewellery use and the high street location of the unit.
“All existing stone pilasters, panels and detailing are retained unchanged by the proposal.
“Internally the security will be enhanced with the provision of roller shutters.”
Breitling is a Swiss luxury watchmaker founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling. It is known for its precision-made chronometers designed for aviators.
Watches of Switzerland describes itself as “the leading luxury watch specialist in the UK” and has had a trading relationship with Breitling dating back to the 1980s.
