People are working to rescue a deer which is trapped in a York school playground this evening (Thursday).
The animal is in the hard-standing play area at St Lawrence’s Primary School.
Shortly before 9pm, people were diverting traffic away from the school on Heslington Road in order to clear a safe path for the scared creature.
A number of young people were inside the playground trying to coax the deer to leave through the open gates.
A man stood by the gates shouting instructions and halting traffic.
The deer has apparently been on school premises for a number of hours. The Nest nursery unit tweeted at 9.37am that a deer was stuck in the field.
It comes less than a week after police warned drivers that more deer were on the roads.
North Yorkshire Police said they have been to ten incidents in the last month where a deer was hit by a car. All the animals died.
Collisions typically increase in spring, when young buck roe deer move to new territories, officers said.
