The Met Office has issued a red warning for extreme heat in York, Selby and other areas in North Yorkshire, for Monday and Tuesday (18 & 19 July) next week.
They say “Exceptional, perhaps record-breaking, temperatures are likely on Monday, then again on Tuesday. Nights are also likely to be exceptionally warm for the UK, especially in urban areas. This is likely to lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. Temperatures are expected to drop away from Wednesday onwards.”
The warning highlights the potential for widespread damage, travel and power disruption and risk to life are likely. The latter relates to all, not just the most vulnerable members of the public.

Dangerous weather is expected and, if you haven’t already done so, you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the severe weather. It is very likely that there will be a risk to life, with substantial disruption to travel, energy supplies and possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure. You should avoid travelling, where possible, and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.
Temperatures are expected to reduce across Wednesday and Thursday.
