Rascal Andy crowned king of the dungeon
With its dastardly attractions and notorious stories, the York Dungeon is unlikely to receive royal approval any time soon. But no matter – they have simply crowned their own king, and here he is.
Andy Harrison, 22, from Market Weighton was named the dungeon’s Carnivále King after much scrutiny of all the entries by the in-house courtroom judge.
The judge coronated Andy because his written application demonstrated the right level of rascalism required for the role.
Carnivále is the dungeon’s summer sideshow and its stars, Ringmaster Walter and his wife Madam Caroline, were on hand to officially sash the new king in his royal attire.
The popular tourist attraction launched a hunt to find a Carnivále King or Queen with a difference, someone that could encapsulate the fiendishly fun spirit of the Dungeon.
People from all walks of life and all shapes and sizes were encouraged to apply, before Andy was unveiled as the winner.
“It’s absolutely amazing to be chosen as the king and be part of this exciting opportunity,” said Andy.
“When I first applied I wasn’t sure what my chances of winning were but thought it was worth a try anyway and I’m so glad it all paid off!”
Ringmaster Walter said: “Andy was the most spectacular, sensational, extraordinary applicant by far and will be perfect as our official Carnivàle King.
“We’re so glad he stepped right up to apply for the title and we’ll no doubt be seeing a lot of him over the next few months as he can visit as often as he wants during his 12 month reign.”
The fabulous Carnivále sideshow runs until September 1 and stars a cast of cheeky and colourful characters, including the darkly entertaining Ringmaster Walter and the mischievous Madame Caroline.
Visitors are also encouraged to try their hand on the wheel of misfortune – if they dare…
