Less than three weeks after the previous attack, late-night raiders have again targeted a Co-op cash machine in York.
A group of thieves dressed in balaclavas attempted to break into the ATM at the Tang Hall Lane branch using power tools at about 3.30am on Thursday (December 6).
Police were called to the scene but the offenders had left in a dark Audi towards Heworth.
Forensic tests
Witnesses told the York Press that they saw people behaving suspiciously 20 minutes before the attack, adding:
-
Suddenly there was a big bang, followed by sparks flying everywhere.
There was a lot of smoke and I could see people looking out of their windows at what was going on.
They seemed to be using some sort of axe grinder to break into the cash machine.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said they had conducted forensic tests at the Co-op. Nothing was stolen from the store.
Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference number NYP-06122018-0039.
The raid comes in the wake of a similar attack on an ATM at the Co-op on Beckfield Lane, Acomb, on November 16.
Witnesses said the damaged cash machine smelled strongly of burned plastic. Nothing was stolen, and the raiders escaped before police arrived.
