Racist chanting directed at a York City player was caught on video and shared on social media.
The appalling incident has now been reported to the FA.
It happened as City striker Lenell John-Lewis stepped up to take a penalty during the away game at Yeovil Town on Saturday.
The racism by some Yeovil fans directed at John-Lewis is clearly audible.
Footage was originally included in the club’s highlights video of their 1-0 defeat by City, but later removed, say fans.
In a statement tonight (Monday), York City said they were “aware of a video that contains racist chanting aimed towards one of our players at Saturday’s match against Yeovil Town.
“We have reported the incident to the FA, who are investigating, and we are happy to leave the investigation in their hands.
“As a club, York City deplores discrimination in all of its forms, and will never tolerate such behaviour. We will make no further comment on the incident at this time.”
For its part, Yeovil Town FC said: “An internal investigation will take place into the matter and we will work with all the relevant authorities.
“Yeovil Town continues to stand against all forms of discrimination.”
The abuse, and the response to it, has appalled fans.
One said on Twitter: “There must have been a conversation that took place, which resulted in that footage being removed from highlights (it hasn’t coincidence). Which means that 2 club officials knew, at least.
“PLUS someone else stood behind that camera, all knew. Nobody said a thing, beyond shameful.”
It is not the first time Yeovil Town has been embroiled in a racism row. In October 2019, Haringey Borough players walked off the pitch after suffering racist abuse from Yeovil fans causing the FA Cup tie to be abandoned.
