The Lucky Cat Shop, on Low Petergate, is celebrating a purr-fect first three months – after launching earlier this year.
It is housed on the first floor of The Cat Gallery at 45 Low Petergate, and owned by gallery owners Peter and Alison Hanson.
The Lucky Cat Shop, which opened in August, offers an original and quirky selection of felines – which are all associated with good fortune.
The cats are designed by Peter and Alison, and they come in three different ranges.
The ‘Original Lucky Cat’ comes in two sizes: one at 8cm tall, complete with personalisable collar and charm. The ‘kitten’ size is 5cm, and comes in a myriad of colours. Some of the kittens even change colour or glow in the dark!
A limited edition Candy Cane Kitten will launch from 18 November.
There are also carved Gemstone Cats, and Japanese Maneki Neko, aka ‘beckoning cat’. These are often kept at the entrance to businesses and residential premises to beckon in prosperity and good fortune.
“The last three months have been a whirlwind,” said Peter. “Having planned to initially trade from our ground floor only, we opened our first floor gallery within a week – it gave customers more room to circulate and by opening an extra till point we managed to avoid queueing.
“Our new Original Lucky Cats and kittens have proved particularly popular. They’re closely linked with our ever-popular York Cat Trail, they make a great souvenir of a visit to York. That said, they are proving equally popular with gift buyers and collectors.
“A lot of work has gone into creating The Lucky Cat Shop but, it would be fair to say that we have enjoyed a healthy dose of good fortune along the way.”
A percentage of every sale is donated to International Cat Care, a UK based cat charity, whose work in education and training helps to improve the lives of 25 million cats worldwide, every year.
