An historic pub near York which was due to undergo a major refurbishment before reopening has instead been put up for sale.
The Duke Of York at Gate Helmsley never reopened after the Covid lockdown. But in March, owner Star Pubs announced it was planning ‘an exciting transformation‘ inside and out.
This was to include a beer patio at the front, a terrace to the rear and exterior redecoration to a ‘modern’ colour scheme.
“The transformed Duke of York will stun guests and take its rightful place as THE destination pub in the area,” the Star Pubs website claimed.
The plan was to find new managers to run the pub.
However, the apparently unrefurbished Duke Of York has now gone on the market for £295,000, plus VAT.
The inn, which dates back to the 1800s, is Grade II listed. Christie & Co are marketing the pub, which includes 5-6 bed living accommodation, a large car park and an “impressive garden to the rear”.
It says: “The Duke of York in Gate Helmsley offers any buyer huge potential to take on this roadside pub on the outskirts of York.
“The plot size is excellent and has been under utilised by the previous owners.
“The living accommodation above makes it an ideal buy for any owner operator or existing operator looking to put a manager or tenant into the site.”
According to Star Pubs, the rent on the Duke of York was £55,835.
