A new store is to open in York city centre, it has been revealed.
The family owned Yorkshire Trading Co is to open a branch on Goodramgate.
It is now converting what was the Bonmarché shop, which closed down in June after a prolonged sale.
The Yorkshire Trading Co, which can trace its roots back to a corner shop in Hull in 1939, is a variety and discount chain with branches across the North.
Before now, the nearest of its stores to York were in Selby and Malton.
A poster in the window of the Goodramgate unit says ‘Your exciting new store is coming soon’.
According to its website, the company has more than “10,000 products in store and online“.
The range includes everything from toys to haberdashery, pets to gardening, cleaning and home maintenance, kitchenware and soft furnishings.
It also stocks seasonal items, including at this time of year a large Christmas range.
“Over the years we have built up a lot of great friends in business which regularly gives us the opportunity to score some incredible clearance deals,” the website says.
There was enthusiasm for the new store coming to York among shoppers on Goodramgate today. One described it as “proper shopping” for residents.
There has been some criticism in recent years of the number of shops aimed at tourists opening in the city centre, while other stores close to be converted into bars and cafés.
Yorkshire Trading Co are recruiting a store manager for the York shop, with a salary of £28,000.
