Things to do

Some of the greatest names in music are descending on York in the coming days.

And two of them are refusing to be put off by the fact that they are dead.

We’re kidding of course, these aren’t the real deal but some of the top tributes. However, it’s a rare chance to see four very different acts recreated in our city within a week.

So here’s who’s on where…

Prince

Fibbers

Sat Nov 26

£10

More details

If you still can’t believe that the singer is no longer with us, head over to Fibbers where Jimi Love recreates the pint-sized purple genius in Purple Rain – The Ultimate Prince Tribute. According to Fibbers, he has “the moves, the pipes and some amazing guitar chops”.

And he’s due back in York at the Barbican next April.

Whitney

Grand Opera House

Tue Nov 29

£20-£27.90

More details

You’ll want to dance with somebody (see what we did there?) when Whitney – Queen of the Night brings the music of the great singer to the Grand Opera House stage.

West End star Rebecca Freckleton takes on the role of Whitney Houston, and is charged with hitting that key change in I Will Always Love You…

Abba

Grand Opera House

Wed Nov 30

£23.25-£25.50

More details

No sooner has tribute Whitney tripped off the Grand Opera House stage than tribute Abba walk on in their shiny white platform boots.

Abba Reunion takes you back to those heady days in the 1970s when the Swedish foursome set the soundtrack to a generation. In the promoter’s words, it’s a “feel-good, party-style tribute concert”.

That gig is followed in December by Abba Mania at the Barbican. Why not go to both? After all, the winner takes it all…

Madness

Acorn Rugby Club

Fri Nov 25

£4-£5

More details

Madness, madness they call it… Badness. Hailing from Hull, Badness is Yorkshire’s answer to the Camden nutty boys. It’s an energetic show and just the way to take your weekend One Step Beyond…
