It’s been trading for more than 50 years, and now a popular York store is looking to expand.
Dean’s Garden Centre wants to increase the size of its café and add a car wash.
The plans come just under a year after the family-run business was sold to the Bradford-based Yorkshire Garden Centres.
Dean’s Garden Centre at Stockton-on-the-Forest was originally created in 1968. Its last major expansion came in 2016 “when the site was considerably improved by the rationalisation of floorspace and the café expansion,” planning documents state.
In its application, the Yorkshire Garden Centre Group says Dean’s planned new covered café extension “will be sized to fit within the current building boundaries, predominantly occupying the same external courtyard space”.
An extra 25 car parking spaces would be created to cope with the expanded café.
The business also wants to provide car washing and valeting facilities with a modular staff office.
“The proposal is to infill part of the current external seating area with a flat roof covered space,” planning documents say.
“The introduction of a hand car wash facility is unique to the locality and will supplement the business revenue.”
There would be nine jobs created, five in the hand car wash, and four in the café.
