Even this pub’s most loyal regular would struggle to recognise it today.
This is a picture of the Pavement Vaults in York as it undergoes a major refit.
The pub, on the corner of Piccadilly, closed last week to begin the makeover.
The Pavement Vaults opened in November 2015, having been transformed from part of what was part of the derelict Old White Swan building.
It was taken over by the York-based Pivovar group, also responsible for the York Tap at the station and Pivni on Patrick Pool, along with pubs in Harrogate, Leeds and Newcastle.
When it opened, Jamie Hawksworth of Pivovar described it as a “landmark venue”. It was named after the original Pavement Vaults which was on Pavement itself and shut in 1963.

As well as serving a range of craft and real ales, the bar serves up a menu barbecue and smoked food.
No date has been given for the reopening of the Pavement Vaults. The bar shared this message on Instagram: “The time is nigh, Pavement Vaults is closing for an exciting refurbishment!
“Not for too long, we’ll back open before you know it for all your beer and smokehouse needs.”
