One of York’s most popular pizzerias is set to reopen – and it’s being taken to the ‘next level’.
Dough Eyed Pizza on Jubbergate, next to Shambles Market, closed with immediate effect last year due to the strain of hospitality.
But owner Chris Phillips announced on Instagram that the beloved pizza place was making a comeback and reopening on Thursday 1 February 2024 – and it’s been revealed that he’ll be collaborating with Bridlington-based pizza chef Adam Gardener.
The bar and pizzeria will reopen in its location on Jubbergate.
Before opening next to Shambles Market, it was one of the original food stalls at Spark York, operated as a pop-up at the Pig & Pastry on Bishopthorpe Road, a pizzeria at Piglets Adventure Farm, spots in both the Crooked Tap and Fox pubs, and a residency at Micklegate Social. It first opened on Jubbergate in 2020.
When Dough Eyed closed in 2023, Chris was looking for a buyer for the business and planned to take a step back from hospitality. However, it was a meeting between the two pizza fanatics that sparked the idea to join up and reopen Dough Eyed.
Adam Gardener is currently the catering manager at the historic stately home Burton Agnes Hall. He’ll remain at Burton Agnes Hall, as well as his new venture with Dough Eyed.
“We realised we shared a very similar mindset on pizza and how we would run a pizzeria/bar in general,” Adam said on social media. “So we have decided to partner up and reopen Dough Eyed as co-owners and push it to the next level.”
The next level will include contemporary-style Neapolitan pizza, and an elevated drinks selection.
Chris shared in an Instagram video that there’ll be “a bigger beer line up with local beers. We’re going to get some stuff in to support local breweries, which will be more affordable for people as well.”
The bar will have eight draft lines. There’s also going to be a revamped wine selection with “French wines, some African wines, Italian wines, maybe some English wines too” on offer.
When Dough Eyed reopens it’s going to be the “same good food and same good drinks,” said Chris. “Same vibe, loud music, and proper pizza.”
