A popular bagel maker has a new permanent location on Shambles Market.
Goldee’s Bagels has opened up on Newgate, and is serving up – you guessed it – bagels! With freshly baked bagels and fillings using local produce, it’s a brilliant addition to York’s bustling market.
YorkMix spoke with owner Alex Goldsack to find out more.
Originally from London, Alex moved up to York to work at Haxby Bakehouse. Then, around three years ago Alex started Goldee’s Bagels – and had been serving up bagel joy every Sunday at Shambles Market, and at other local markets such as Food Circle in Tang Hall.
Now, he’s got a permanent spot in the market on the corner of Newgate and Silver Street. The spot was previously occupied by Newgate Hog Roast.
Alex bakes the bagels himself fresh every day. On the menu there’s plain, multi-seed, sesame or everything (black and white sesame seed, poppy seed, garlic and onion salt) bagels to choose from (£2), with fillings such as cream cheese (plain, chive or dill) and sliced cucumber on offer (starting from £1).
The menu also includes fresh bagel sandwiches – currently on offer is The Fisherman’s Friend with smoked salmon, dill cream cheese and pickled red onion (£8.50); The Yorkshire Ham, Egg and Cheese with roasted mortadella and ham, Emmental and a runny egg (£8.50); and The Portobello with roasted portobello mushroom in sage and garlic butter and chive cream cheese (£7.50).
“The menu will be developing and changing,” Alex said. “At the moment, I want to focus on making sure everything’s fresh.
“We’re trying to use as many local ingredients as possible. I get a lot of veg from John (Harrison) on the market, cheese from Moo York, Staal smoked salmon, and meats from Harrogate.”
The reaction so far has been very positive. “I think because I’ve been on the market already, people kind of know me already around here,” said Alex. “People have been very supportive and very helpful.”
At the moment, Goldee’s Bagels is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 4pm.
“The plan is to hopefully add on a Thursday,” said Alex. “We’re just seeing how it goes.”
