A loyal customer of the bakers, Costello’s in Malton, Driffield and Wetherby, has told YorkMix of his disappointment in hearing that the shops won’t be reopening
Costello’s Bakery, launched in 1999, has a base in Sutton-On-The Forest but has announced its popular shops will be closed permanently due to rising costs associated with running the business.
The Malton shop had already shut earlier this year but it was hoped it could reopen.
The business, famous for creating and sourcing hand-made, sustainable and ethically traded products, will carry on and you can buy their much loved cakes online.
This is what the company, run by James and and Louise Costello, said on Facebook: “The costs involved in running the shops is now too high to continue BUT you can absolutely still shop with us online and let us deliver directly to you or your loved ones.
“We’re doing everything to keep costs low or even reduce prices where we can to help you, our lovely customers, to be able to continue shopping with us and still have a treat when times are tough – you can still have your cake and eat it too.”
Customer, John Gelson in Norton, says he often bought cakes from Costello’s and people hoped that the Malton store would be reopened.
He says customers understand that running costs are getting out of hand, especially the electricity and gas bills, and he fears for other businesses in Ryedale.
