A pop-up food market opened in York today.
And the couple behind it have been reflecting on their “whirlwind year”.
Frango’s Food Market is up and running on Parliament Street in the former Optical Express store.
It is run by Ted and Emma Hustler and like their other York ventures, is inspired by Portuguese cuisine.
The food market will run through until December to coincide with the Christmas Market.
Items on the opening menu include chicken, halloumi or chicke burritos at £11.50 and pastéis de nata, topped with whipped cream and sprinkles for £4.
There’s also piri-piri chicken and drinks including luxury hot chocolate and home-made eogg-nog for £5.
Started in Spark
As readers of YorkMix will remember, Ted and Emma began their culinary business journey with Frango Eduardo in Spark:York.
They were hoping to move into the former Cast Iron Bath shop on Colliergate, but when that fell through they opened Tasca Frango on the other side of the same street last August.
That followed a stint in the former Supersonic Gym on Stonebow.
And their next permanent venture is nearly ready – Cavo, a restaurant at the Cocoa Works, the residential development created from the former Rowntree’s factory.
In a post on Instagram, Emma reflected on a non-stop year.
“This last year has been a complete whirlwind. A tight, eight-week turnaround to turn what was once a casual tea room in to a fully fledged 60 cover restaurant, complete with brand new kitchen, revamped bathrooms, private dining, and an authentic and cosy interior, took plenty of blood, sweat and lots of tears.
“We opened to the public last August and WOW – what a year it’s been! Our incredible customers have remained so faithful, continuing to visit us time and time again. We welcome new customers every week, which is always such a treat.”
Family wise it’s been a rollercoaster year.
“We’ve come a long way – Ted and I have been through a lot this past year. My lovely Mum passed away which was incredibly tough.
“We got married in October and we’re now expecting a baby on Christmas Day! We’ve spent another summer over at The Principal Gardens with Thors, catered for plenty of outside events, took on the kitchen at The Mitre in Knaresborough, and should (hopefully) open our latest venture on Haxby Road very, very soon!
“There is absolutely no rest for the wicked!”
