Police have pledged to take action after pony and trap races were held on a main road in North Yorkshire.
Officers were alerted to the incident at 8am on Saturday morning.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police found themselves in a difficult situation when approximately 80-90 members of the travelling community attended A168 outside Rainton to conduct illegal trap & pony races.
Incident location
“The behaviour of those involved placed both themselves and other road users at significant risk as racing was directed into oncoming traffic.”
Because the traps were ridden on both sides of the road, other drivers had to take action to avoid a collision, including mounting the grass verge.
“Whilst police were unsuccessful in stopping the race in its entirety we were successful in securing enough evidence to proceed with prosecutions for a number of driving offences.
“One car was seized for insurance offences and it’s driver reported to summons for careless driving.
“Further convictions for the other drivers involved will follow in due course.”
Officers are also asking for the public’s help.
The spokesperson said: “As part of the ongoing investigation, we are requesting dashcam footage that may cover the incident or any other information.
“If you can help, please email [email protected] or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference number 12250046212.”
