A traffic officer who fronted a police road safety crackdown has been sacked after he was caught driving at 154mph.
PC Adam Smith was dismissed after a misconduct hearing by North Yorkshire Police at its Northallerton headquarters.
He faced two allegations at the hearing on 24 May.
The first was that he drove at 98mph along the A1M northbound near Boroughbridge at 8.14am.
And the second was that he drove at speeds of up to 154 miles per hour later in the same journey along the A1M.
In both cases there was “no policing purpose for the journey”.
In September 2022, PC Smith was attached to the road police group. He recorded a video from his police car to reassure people in villages near Selby that they were cracking down on dangerous driving.
Roads in and around Brotherton and Fairburn on a Sunday night saw up to 100 cars passing through as part of “the Sunday cruise” street racing.
In response, officers from the force’s roads policing group set up a dedicated road safety operation.
PC Smith was quoted as saying, “This is Selby not Silverstone”.
North Yorkshire Police has now published the verdict from the hearing. It says: “The officer accepted there was no policing purpose for the excess speed and admitted his behaviour breached the standard of professional behaviour in relation to discreditable conduct and amounted to gross misconduct.
“The chair, Chief Constable Tim Forber, determined that PC 0008 Adam Smith’s actions, as admitted, amounted to gross misconduct and balancing all the factors, dismissed the officer with immediate effect.
“The officer will be placed on the College of Policing Barred list.”
