A man died on a York city centre street early this morning.
Officers were called by the ambulance service at around 4.30am on Wednesday (August 22) after members of the public came across an injured man, aged in his 60s, outside Tesco in Piccadilly.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Despite the efforts of members of the public and medical staff at the scene, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.”
For most of the day the area was cordoned off while officers carried out an examination of the area.
Merchantgate, between Fossgate and Piccadilly, was sealed off with police tape, with police vans parked at both sides. The Red Lion pub was also sealed off by yellow ‘Crime Scene Do Not Enter’ tape.
Cars and buses were diverted away from the street.
At 3.20pm, North Yorkshire Police issued this update:
-
Police believe that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.
Officers will prepare a report for the coroner.
The examination of the scene is now complete and the area has now reopened.
Officers are in the process of contacting the man’s next of kin.
