Police have issued a fresh update on the tragic incident at a York city centre store.
Officers were called to Mappin & Webb jewellers on 26 July after being called to an altercation in the Coney Street shop.
This resulted in customer Sam Diatta being restrained on the floor by a member of the store’s staff and three members of the public.
Mr Diatta became unresponsive. Paramedics gave him first aid at the scene then took him to York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Today, North Yorkshire Police said they have been notified by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) that they will not be investigating the police’s actions in response to the incident.
Neither has the IOPC directed North Yorkshire Police to carry out its own investigation into the officers’ actions.
The incident was referred to the IOPC by North Yorkshire Police. This is standard procedure when someone dies following police attendance at an incident.
The police and medical investigations into the circumstances and cause of Mr Diatta’s death are ongoing.
Four people who were arrested in connection with the incident remain on police bail.
