Police are investigating the fire that severely damaged a Selby shop.
Officers are appealing for witnesses and information about the blaze at the McColl’s convenience store on Barwic Parade.
Emergency services were called at about 1.30pm yesterday (Saturday, 27 February).
Extensive damage was caused to the store as a result of the fire. No staff or customers were injured, and no arrests have been made.
In their report, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “The cause of the fire is unknown but may have been a discarded cigarette.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are requesting the public’s assistance to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“They are appealing for customers who were in the store at the time to contact them, particularly a man who initially alerted staff to the fire in the back yard of the premises.”
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact North Yorkshire Police.
