It followed desperate attempts to rescue a man from the Ouse in the early hours.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 2.30am this morning (Tuesday) police received reports that a man had entered the River Ouse off Lendal Bridge.
“Police attended with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and the York Rescue Boat with several attempts made by both the public and emergency services to rescue the man.
