Police are investigating an incident focused on the river in York city centre.

Lendal Bridge was closed this morning for more than half an hour as emergency services went to the scene.

The bridge was sealed off at about 9.50am this morning (Saturday), but reopened at about 10.28am.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police told YorkMix:

  • Lendal Bridge is currently open.

We are dealing with an ongoing investigation. It’s at a very early stage and we can’t release any further information at this time.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called out to reports of a person in the water.

Earlier, in a post on social media, the police said: “We are currently dealing with an incident near Lendal Bridge, York, which will be closed until further notice.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst we carry out our investigation.”

As well as police vans, fire crews and an ambulance went to the scene. York Rescue Boat was also on the river under Lendal Bridge.

Activity seems to be concentrated around the steps leading to Dame Judi Dench Walk.

More as we get it.
