Police cordoned off two streets in York this afternoon (Thursday).

Both Pavement and Piccadilly were closed to traffic.

Two fire engines also went to the scene, including the aerial platform, outside the Pavement entrance of Marks & Spencer.

Firefighters were lifted via the platform to the roof of the Lloyds Bank building.

They were investigating loose masonry that looked set to fall on shoppers below.

Crowds gathered on the corner of Parliament Street to watch the emergency teams at work.

Fire crews have now fixed the problem, and the roads have reopened.
