A quirky York building next to an historic gateway could soon have a new occupant.
Number 2 Monkgate has stood empty since Meadowcrofts Dry Cleaners moved round the corner to Lord Mayor’s Walk in June 2022.
The one storey building is next door to Monk Bar.
There are now plans to give it a new role.
Called Vi Coffee, it would become “a café with a small wine shop, serving food”.
A licensing application submitted to City of York Council says it would be “a speciality coffee shop in the mornings, delivering unique and outstanding coffee experiences from a seasonal programme.
“From 5pm, it will shift focus into a natural/ biodynamic wine shop and small plates.
“Similar to the coffee, offering curated wine experiences, with a proud emphasis and English wine producers.”
The application is from Vi Goodram Ltd, a company incorporated in January, with 31-year-old Elliot Shore as its only director.
Number 2 Monkgate is a Grade II listed building. It was built as a shop in about 1865 and, according to Historic England, it forms “an integral part of the streetscape on Monkgate”.
The licensing application asks for opening hours of 8am-11pm daily, with the supply of alcohol allowed from 10am-11pm.
