Meetings across the city are taking place between City of York Council and community groups about how best to build on previous work to maintain and develop York’s award-winning parks and gardens.
The meetings are being held about Hull Road Park, West Bank Park, Glen Gardens and Clarence Gardens. Each is being focussed on a particular park or garden and discussions are based on how best to take forward existing investment and maintenance, and how local people might best deploy their talents, connections and interests to assist in and continue that work.
Organisations and individuals with an existing interest in the city’s main parks have been invited to attend, as well as community leaders who may be interested in getting involved in the future or who may be in a position to encourage others to do so are being invited along.
Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “The city already has five Green Flags for its parks which reflect the highest national quality standard. We are proud of these awards which reflect the welcome that our parks provide, the community involvement that takes place, as well as the high standard of safety and security, maintenance, conservation and sustainability.
“We are aiming for more Green Flags, as they can unlock sources of additional funding to further improve our parks.We want to continue to develop them and we believe the key to this, especially when budgets are so tight, is to grow community involvement in the running of them. We would like to discuss how we can build upon the friends groups that already exist for some parks, and to encourage more community activity in managing and developing our parks.”
While some have joint management plans already drawn up with community groups and are being progressed with community groups, any new plans needed will begin to be shaped following these meetings.
