More than 100 affordable homes will be built in Dringhouses, York, if plans just released get the go-ahead.
A partnership between Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) and local developer Gateway Developments has launched a consultation for the 114 new and affordable homes off Sim Balk Lane.
There would be homes with a range of 1-, 2, 3 and 4-bedrooms. Around 60% of the homes would be for social rent with JRHT, and around 40% shared ownership where buyers purchase a share in a home with the remaining shared rented from JRHT.
There would be 14 accessible bungalows to meet the needs of people living with disabilities.
Developers say these homes would contribute to York’s significant shortfall in affordable housing delivery, which has seen only 1.6 years of affordable homes delivered over a nine-year period between 2012 and 2021.
“With York regarded as the least affordable city in Yorkshire to rent according to a Zoopla survey in 2022, this proposal for 114 affordable homes managed by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust would provide increased options for people looking to rent in the city,” developers said.

The site is in walking distance to the Askham Bar Park & Ride and Tesco Askham Bar. There is also strong highway, cycle, and walkway connectivity to the city centre.
The homes would be accessed via a new vehicle and pedestrian access from Sim Balk Lane. Following initial discussions with Bishopthorpe White Rose Football Club, a parking area has been identified which could be jointly used by club visitors.
David Boyes-Watson from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust said: “We are dedicated to delivering more affordable homes here in York. This proposal on Sim Balk Lane would help contribute to meeting York’s growing demand for affordable homes, including for people who require accessible accommodation.”
A public drop-in exhibition is scheduled at York College on Thursday 2 March between 3.30pm and 7pm where residents can chat through the plans with the project team.
A leaflet has been distributed to nearby residents which includes details of the public drop-in exhibition, details of the consultation website, and a freepost feedback form. People can learn more about the plans and comment by visiting the website.
