Racegoers enjoyed some first class sport – and a chance to explore new facilities – as they returned to York Racecourse for the first time this season today (Wednesday).
As the curtain-raising Dante Festival began, the cloudy skies were in contrast to the colourful style of many of the outfits on display at Knavesmire.
Those attending today were the first to see the £5m Southern End Development.
It’s a work in progress. The new Roberto Pavilion including the Tote were completed. The rest of the work – due to be completed over the next few weeks – was visible through peepholes in the fencing.
Huge amounts were also raised for the day’s charity – Guide Dogs.
On the track, the winners included 22-1 shot Secret Satire, who boosted her Classic aspirations with an impressive victory in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes.
Mill Stream won by a nose to land a thrilling renewal of the 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stake.
And Crystal Delight benefited from a fine front-running ride from Jim Crowley in the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Stakes.
The Dante Festival continues until Friday. More on the racecourse website.
