Those of us who can remember going into FR Stubbs and asking the overalled assistants for a quarter inch grommet will hardly recognise the place now.
Admittedly, the ironmongers moved out more than 20 years ago, and the landmark building on Foss Bridge has more recently been home to fish restaurant chain Loch Fyne.
But it has never looked so swish and swanky as it does now, as it has become home to Marzano Italian Grill.
We revealed earlier this month that the popular Italian on Fossgate was making the move to the Stubbs building.
Foss Bridge House dates from 1878 when it was built for the linen drapers WJ Whitehead & Co. It is Grade II listed.
The owner said at the time: “We aim to embrace the building’s historic charm while creating a more spacious and elevated dining experience for our guests.”
And they have certainly succeeded, as these pictures show.
Managing to be both spacious and cosy, the restaurant has seating over two floors, with the stunning staircase a centrepiece.
There are quirky decor touches, including a wall of old sewing machines.
The restaurant says: “We can’t wait to welcome you to the new Marzano and continue serving you the Italian dishes you know and love.
“Come visit us and enjoy the same great food in our new, beautiful setting. See you soon!”
