The first snow of the year has fallen on York, making it a challenge to get around by car, bike or on foot.
The city has a covering of several inches today, with more still falling.
City of York Council has issued this warning today: “Residents are being warned to stay away from riverside paths with expected icy conditions making walking conditions hazardous.
“This is because paths can’t be cleaned and gritted as usual due to flood waters, leaving a muddy residue.”
Pavement snow ploughs have been out this morning clearing city centre routes and the riverside path along King’s Staith and beyond.
The city walls are also closed this morning.
The weather is causing some travel disruption further afield.
Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon Airport both closed their runways on Sunday morning due to heavy snow. Manchester said its teams are working to clear them “as quickly as possible” but had been hampered by “heavy snow” around 7am.
National Highways warned up to 25cm of snow could hit roads in northern England, including the A628 Woodhead Pass, which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire through the Peak District and was closed overnight in both directions between the A616 at Flouch and the A57 at Hollingworth, because of snow.
National Rail said the line between Leeds and Halifax via Dewbury was closed in both directions, with disruption on northern routes expected into Monday.
