A new shop has opened in York – after its London branch went viral on TikTok.
Notting Hill Jacket opened its original branch on Portobello Road in London.
It’s second branch has just opened on Low Ousegate. It’s owned by Ehsanullah Takanai. YorkMix spoke with his brother, Nangialai, to find out more.
It sells reversible patterned quilted jackets which are mostly designed in Notting Hill and then made in India.
Some of the fabrics come from countries like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. The handmade jackets feature embroidery, patchworks and are made from mostly natural materials like pure cotton.
“That’s why it’s unique and different from other products,” said Nangialai.
Nangialai explained that in their Portobello Road location they had a lot of customers from York and Edinburgh that were travelling all the way to London for their products.
“We got an opportunity in York, so we started,” he said. “If we have customers from York it’s better to go there.”
As well as jackets (£39.99), the shop also stocks items like duffle bags and gilets.
The reaction so far to the new shop has been positive, with visitors being “very pleased” and “happy” when they come in.
“We are providing something new and exciting for them,” said Nangialai. “Mostly we’re trying to bring something that you cannot find at other shops.”
Notting Hill Jacket has permanently opened on Low Ousegate, and they hope to bring the brand to other cities too like Edinburgh.
Video surprise
The business isn’t really active on social media, so Nangialai said they “didn’t know” at first they had gone viral on TikTok.
He explained that TikTokers would post videos of themselves wearing their products which would garner a lot of views.
“It was a surprise for us,” said Nangialai. “A lot of people were coming in and showing screenshots of customers who took videos in the shop, and they wanted a specific colour of jacket.”
