It looks like a corner of old York has been turned into New York… for a few days at least.
That’s because Netflix filmmakers have moved into a corner of Clifton Moor.
They have transformed the Caramba Steakhouse, near the Vue cinema on Stirling Road, into an altogether different restaurant for the purposes of the story.
It has become Mikey’s Trattoria. And when we went along to the set, there was a yellow New York City cab parked outside.
Close by in the neighbouring car park, several large American cars were waiting for their moment in front of the cameras.
These included one with the livery of Paterson Police. In real-life, Paterson Police are based in the state of New Jersey, south of New York.
So what’s being filmed? According to the Caramba Steakhouse, it’s the sequel to the smash Netflix movie Bank Of Dave.
That movie told the story of Dave Fishwick, a working class Burnley man and self-made millionaire, who fought to set up a community bank.
It proved to be popular around the world, and scored an impressive 85% on reviews site Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel sees Dave taking on a new and more dangerous adversary: the payday lenders.
Dave is again played by Rory Kinnear, familiar from multiple roles on big and small screen, while Jo Hartley reprises her role as wife Nicola Fishwick.
The Caramba Steakhouse is closed Monday to Thursday this week for the filming. It is back open on Friday.
York has been home to several Netflix shoots in recent times.
In April last year, the people behind The Crown took over York Minster to shoot a recreation of the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla, which originally took place in St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
The previous October, scenes from Netflix thriller Bodies were shot on board a City Cruises boat on the Ouse.
And Christmas 2021 saw the release of Father Christmas Is Back on the streaming giant, featured brief shots of York as well as several other Yorkshire locations.
