This is the large hole that has opened up in one of York’s most popular shopping streets.
It spans about half the width of Low Petergate. And that means the road will be closed to traffic until it’s repaired.
The hole is now cordoned off behind fencing panels.
A City of York Council spokesperson said today (Thursday): “City of York Council has closed Low Petergate outside Poundland this afternoon.
“It is likely to remain closed until Monday morning at the earliest.
“Work to permanently repair a void which was plated before Christmas, has revealed a hole which extends halfway across the road.
“A diversion is in place around Swinegate. Work to repair the road will start tomorrow.
“Pedestrians are unaffected as half the road and one footway remain open.”
It is the second time in the last year that Low Petergate has been closed to traffic.
In October 2022, it was shut suddenly after structural problems were uncovered in one of the street’s buildings, number 71.
There were fears part of it could collapse into the road.
That proved to be a lengthy closure. Low Petergate didn’t reopen to vehicles until July 2023, nine months later, after the repairs were completed.
