Start your weekend early – as this landmark York pub reopens today after being taken over by new management.
YorkMix reported earlier this month that The Gillygate had closed suddenly, but that it was under new management and set to reopen soon.
Now that time has arrived! The newly-refurbished Gillygate pub was reopening at 5pm today (Thursday).
With new televisions installed, new products, fresh finishing touches, and more – it’s looking great.
YorkMix spoke with the new management team, Phil Gamble and Julie Hodgson, to find out what’s new.
“We’ve moved the TVs so the large TV is now in the bar area,” explained Phil. “We’ve also had another TV fitted so we’ve got two Sky boxes.
“So as of next week, we’ll then be able to show different sports. For instance, we could having horse racing on one, football on the other – that sort of thing.”
In the back room the pool table has been removed to free up some space. In the coming weeks they’re looking to put up a dartboard and to “see if it’s possible to get the pub involved in a local Dart League.”

“We’ve changed products within the bar area,” said Phil. “We’ve had Red Stripe brought in instead of Heineken, and Cruzcampo brought in instead of Foster’s.”
The accommodation upstairs has now been finished and is now live for bookings through Booking.com.
“We’re getting bookings through already,” he said
Also coming in the next few weeks is a new food menu.
“It won’t be your average, standard food menu,” hinted Phil. “But I’m not going to say too much on that just yet.” It was previously said that the menu will feature a ‘Caribbean type twist’.
There will also be a stage outside for “live bands and entertainment,” said Julie.
The first gig will be Darlington ska band The Skapones on May bank holiday weekend. It will be an outdoor free event on Sunday 28 May.
“All we ask is that if you pop into the pub before then and would like a ticket just to let us know, so we can make a note of it and get an idea of how many people are coming – or message us on Facebook.”
Now it’s reopened, “we just need customers!” said Julie. “We just want to say hello to everybody in the community as well.”
