The fire on Strensall Common is almost out.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said they only had one crew there on Sunday evening (5 May).

They are checking for hotspots and damping down. They will return again to make sure it is out.

Previously dozens of firefighters were at the scene of the fire which at one point stretched 500m long.

Fire crews from Huntington, Acomb, York, Malton, Thirsk, Tadcaster, Kirkbymoorside, Selby and Easingwold were involved in tackling the blaze.

They were called out at about 2.40pm. An all terrain vehicle and water bowser were also at the scene.

Firefighters used hoses and knapsack sprayers to control the fire.

No cause for the blaze has been given yet.
