Residents who live in a York suburb are facing an “intolerable” and “clearly unsafe” parking situation.
And they are petitioning City of York Council to do something about it.
Osbaldwick councillor Mark Warters has organised the petition.
It calls for the council to implement single yellow line traffic restrictions on Tranby Avenue and Cavendish Grove “to deal with the dangerous and inconsiderate university related parking”.
Cllr Warters told YorkMix: “York University have for many years been indifferent to the adverse affects the organisation’s accommodation and parking policies have on neighbouring residential communities.
“The parking chaos in Badger Hill, instead of being tackled sensibly by City of York Council and the university, was simply moved across Hull Road into Osbaldwick when a Badger Hill Respark scheme was brought in a couple of years ago.
“That was instead of the obvious solution of revisiting the university travel policies and encouraging student and staff use of the spare capacity in the on-site car parks
“The situation in Osbaldwick is now intolerable for residents and clearly unsafe for road users.
“Therefore in the absence of any sensible action by York University I have put a petition together calling for single yellow line parking restrictions between 10am-3pm Monday to Friday on the affected length of Tranby Avenue and Cavendish Grove.
“This is the only solution I can see that inconveniences council tax paying residents the least and doesn’t involve them in the complexity and cost of a Respark scheme whilst disrupting the long term dumping of university related parking.”
The e-petition has collected more than 120 signatures and calls on the council “to deal with the dangerous and inconsiderate university-related parking”.
It will be presented by Cllr Warters to a meeting of the full council next Thursday (21 March).
