This will be the new HQ of one of York’s oldest companies, if plans are approved.

Building services company Shouksmiths was established in 1820. Their HQ is on Murton Way on the Osbaldwick Industrial Estate.

But a planning application states: “The current office buildings are prefabricated and more than 50 years old.

“The warehouse and storage buildings that currently occupy the site are similarly dated and house a variety of businesses who will/can be accommodated in the proposed redevelopment which also offers new opportunity for business to find a home and expand in their current location.”

Under the plans, these old buildings would be replaced “with an efficient redevelopment of office and light industrial buildings, to provide modern updated bespoke, flexible, fully serviced accommodation”.

The buildings planned for the site

A variety of tenants have operated from the site including Colas, Shouksmiths and The Stable Company.

The new buildings would be “designed to enhance the setting of the industrial estate, and provide a recognised, welcoming frontage presence to the established use of the site, and the designated industrial estate land,” the application states.

Traffic movements “are anticipated to be slightly raised from their current levels, but not sufficiently to create noise nuisance”.

Planning documents add: “The proposals are bound to create new jobs and employment opportunities, many of which will benefit the local community and the additional visitors and purchases will contribute to the local economy.”
