With its window filled with mannequin heads wearing a variety of eye-catching wigs, Hair Universe was something of a landmark for York shoppers.
But it closed suddenly a few weeks ago – and now the reason has become clear.
Parent company Hair Universe York Ltd has gone into liquidation

It has appointed Martin Halligan, based in Leeds, as its liquidator.
Documents filed at Companies House show that Hair Universe York Ltd owed £105,325 to creditors, including £7,500 to banks and £1,000 to the taxman.
The company’s biggest debt is to its landlords. Property company D&M Atherton Ltd owns 5-7 Nessgate, the building Hair Universe traded from for many years.
D&M Atherton, based at Moor Monkton near York, has two directors, Robert Missin and Janet Hancock. It is owed £52K.
Business loan providers Market Finance and You Lend Ltd are owed £10K and £9K respectively. And it owes £350 to City of York Council in rates.

The single director of Hair Universe York Ltd, Muhammad Farooq, is owed £6,500, according to the accounts.
A sign above the Hair Universe shop window used to state: “Stockists of 100% Human Hair Extensions, Clipin, Pre-Bonded Wigs, Ponytails, Hair Pieces.”
According to its website, which is still live, Hair Universe “work with the best brands in the business to help you look after the condition of your hair and keep it looking at its best.
“Whether you’re looking for shampoo, conditioner, styling products, electrical stylers or even hair treatments – you’ll find it all here.”
The building on Nessgate is now being refurbished. But there’s no news yet of whether a new tenant is imminent.
