It isn’t just a shop, it’s the start of a York odyssey.
York Glass on Shambles sells beautiful, hand-crafted glass ornaments, including the famous York Lucky Cat.
And it is also home to the York Cat Trail – the walk around the city where you try to spot all the feline sculptures scampering over rooftops and up walls.

Sadly, York Glass will close its Shambles shop this festive season. Happily, that is not the end of the story – or the trail.
Director at York Glass Ltd John Hopkinson told YorkMix: “The Fabulous & Original York Cat Trail will continue to be distributed throughout the city and the ever popular York Lucky Cat will continue to be sold online and through selected outlets.”
He thanked customers for their many years’ loyalty adding that the shop’s festive offer would still be available at annual Christmas markets – while the increased time available without the shop would provide more opportunity to refine the online offer.

York Glass has been trading on Shambles for nearly 14 years. John said: “There will soon be an Airbnb experience featuring the York Cat Trail.”
He said they’d taken the decision to close the shop because “the rents in York swallow too much of what is left whilst York continues to be very much food and drink orientated – with shoppers continuing to shop online or at retail parks”.
Family members and also other staff were not interested in keeping it on – while “the rents in York swallow too much of what is left”.
