A new fantasy-themed gift shop has opened on Shambles – but this one has nothing to do with boy wizards.
Instead it has a Game Of Thrones theme. Fronted by a sign declaring, ‘You know nothing, Jon Snow!’ the shop sells all sorts of merchandise based on the blockbuster TV series.
T-shirts, banners, heat-changing mugs, action figures – they are all here with that familiar logo. It also sells other fantasy and sci-fi merch, from Doctor Who, Marvel and other franchises.
It’s good timing – the hotly-anticipated final season of the show begins in only a few days’ time.
The shop has opened in what was The Gift Gallery at the Pavement end of Shambles.
That store closed after nine years in January, despite winning the title of best gift shop in the North in 2018.
Change of pace
Some had feared that Harry Potter was taking over the street. This followed the amazing success of The Shop That Must Not Be Named, opened by York businessman Adam Rodway in May 2017.
Filled with products from the Potterverse, the shop was in the perfect location. Designers from the Harry Potter movies are said to have taken their inspiration for Diagon Alley from Shambles.
Two more Harry Potter shops followed – this time run by the Gold Brothers, one of Edinburgh’s most prominent retailing families, who own a series of gift shops selling tartan souvenirs in the Scottish capital.
YorkMix understands that the new Game of Thrones shop is also a Gold Brothers production.
But the original Shambles Potter shop is still going strong – it doubled in size last year.
