It’s cold. And that’s official.
Temperatures have plunged across the UK – and nowhere was colder than North Yorkshire.
The lowest temperature in Britain was -9.8°C, recorded in Topcliffe, near Thirsk, overnight.
And even in York, the temperature dropped to -8ºC:
That was nearly as cold as the chilliest spot in Scotland: -8.7°C was recorded in Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway.
In York today, temperatures are not forecast to get above 2°C, with a low of -2°C. Night-time temperatures are set to stay below freezing until Saturday.
Gritters have been out on the roads both overnight and this morning.
Meanwhile, river levels continue to fall. There remain two flood warnings and three flood alerts in North Yorkshire, but eight flood warnings have been removed in the last 24 hours.
The level of the River Ouse in the city centre is down to 2.85m, and City of York Council said the clean-up has begun.
Elsewhere in the country, motorists have been urged to take care on the roads due to difficult driving conditions, with “blustery” and “often wintry” showers expected across northern and western coasts.
